about

SONG DESCRIPTION:

The song is called "Raise Your Hand if You Care About Somebody out in the World”
I like to embrace goofiness -
takes the edge off a little bit.
This song is definitely goofy.
It’s kind of a stream of consciousness narration-style song
similar to a FARP (Free Association Rhythmic Poetry).

I tell this story about seeking out fortunes
from fortune cookies
and thinking about how they apply to my life.

I got the idea
because
I have this obsession with making lists.
Whenever I think of an idea of any kind
I write it down
and I try to categorize into the proper list.
one of the categories is just a list of statements I call One-Liners.
If i get an idea that’s just a one line statement
like a little reminder to myself,
or just a thought that I think sounds cool,
or something that seems like
“words of wisdom,”
or a mantra,
then it goes into the one-liners list.
Some are cool and helpful,
some are completely ridiculous.
I’ve been doing this for years
and I have hundreds.

I’ll give you a few examples:

Purposeful lack of decoration is a decoration.
You don’t have to know what you’re doing to do something amazing.
As soon as you claim a territory you lose a piece of it.
The best possible system is eliminating the need for a system.
If I don't have anything, then I won't have anything to try to control.
If there was a silver billet it would be awareness.
Discomfort is the seed of wisdom. (I feel like I might have taken that one from somewhere)
Feeling music is more important than anything else about it.
Just because you have something good going, doesn’t mean that you have it under control.
Just the right amount of not caring can save the day.
In depression nothing matters and nothing feels worse, In meditation nothing matters and nothing feels better.
All you need is taste and time to create amazing art.
Leaving an activity wanting more is more valuable then actually having done more.
You think I haven't travelled much but I regularly visit alternate universes.
Looking really fit is just a side effect of my antidepressant medication. (for the record, I don’t look that fit, and I was talking about exercise in that one)
No matter how much training and success, you'll find yourself no better than anyone else.
I've diagnosed myself with ASHD, Attention Surplus Hyperfocus Disorder.

So, I have this massive list.
I’ve always wondered what I would use them for,
which is why I took the opportunity to list so many of them right now.
I look through this list sometimes for song topic ideas,
which I was doing for this song,
and I decided that just wanted to list a bunch of them.
So in the story, they come up as fortunes from fortune cookies.

lyrics

SONG LYRICS:

Everybody's talking about positive psychology,
what makes them feel good...
you know,
what should make you feel good,
like, the real deal, the inside scoop.

I got a fortune cookie from this delicious pan-asian cuisine restaurant
and it said something like,
"Balance will be in your future,"
and I was like,
"Man, I have waiting for that for so long."

I asked the owner of the restaurant whether or not the fortune can still work on me if I don't actually eat the cookie
'cause I'm trying to cut out extra sugar from my diet, you know?
I was unable to get a solid answer.

I don't feel balanced yet
but balance is just one of those things...
and just one possible fortune among many.

oh, hold on, let me play this main riff real quick.

Feels good

But I don't feel balanced yet

Feeling unsettled
I went ahead and bought a wholesale bag of fortune cookies
determined to unlock the deepest secrets
from the most complex entity known to human kind.
There were definitely some choice selections that hit home
such as:

"Laziness is the abuse of freedom.
No matter your age life is always just beginning for you.
You're greatest strength is your greatest weakness.
You are a sail boat and meditation is the wind.

Solving problems doesn't require being smart, it requires being patient.
True art is without ego.
Understanding beauty means that it is impossible to not see it everywhere at all times.
Fear is your only true adversity.
Talking to others is a mistake, you must talk with them.
Half of the value of a piece of art is that it is decidedly finished by the artist.

Your work is no good if you don't actively appreciate the work of others.
You can only live once you accept death.
Failure is the beginning stage of success.
There is no justice in revenge.
Ideas are more valuable than money.
Life is miserable if you don't wake up for it.
Good art does not have to be new, it just has to be honest.
The more you give, the less you need.

What feels like acting at random is really your intuition at it's best.
Don't be afraid to leave something good if it's not what you want.
The harder you work, the less you will boast.

Life moves along beautifully but you have to move with it.
Ideas come from watering the garden of your mind.
Seek out criticism and take it well.
Creativity gives learning a purpose."

Yeah.
All kinds of things like,

"Caring for your work without caring for the outcome is the only way to succeed."

Really good shit.
Really good shit in general.
Then finally,
the very last fortune I read said,

"Raise your hand if you care about somebody out in the world."

Whoa!

Is this one trying to tell me that selflessly caring for other people is the only way to achieve lasting satisfaction with yourself?

oh man...

That's what I needed.

whew...

Raise your hand if you care about somebody out in the world.

Raise your hand if you care about somebody.
